I, too, have been dreaming of the beach and want to scoop you all up and travel to Portugal again. Beautiful words, beautiful thoughts, beautiful longing...

When I was a little girl, my family took a trip to Chicago. I remember jumping into the pool with a blowup ring around me. My dad was right there, but I slipped through. I came up out of the water sobbing. I was terrified. I think I've been a little afraid of the water ever since. The thing is that I love being near it. Maybe just not in it. The smell of the sea air. The cool soft sand beneath my feet. And yes, the coconut scented tanning oil.

I almost cried reading this having grown up driving the hour to the beach > I am 75 and still have 3 surfboards. We moved to Newport when I was 12 and the Ocean and I bonded . For me this was a story about someone never tasting a donut , or not ever experiencing a kiss and what goes with it. I have always felt sad when I meet someone that has grown up never being in the water , perhaps unable to swim . My mom could not swim and was deathly afraid of the water. Still she took me to swim lessons and watched as i paddled rafts into the waves knowing she would never be able to enter the water to help. I am glad there was a happy ending of children with sand all over them and tasting the salt water diving in the waves and mom at the beach with sand in her toes too watching them.

One of my first memories is with my grandparents at the beach too. I remember the sunset and laughing and running and skipping the waves and then falling down face first. My face was a mask of sand and saltwater. I cried a lot. If that isn’t a metaphor for life, I don’t know what is!! Here’s to overcoming life’s hurdles both big and small. Xoxox
